Improving the accuracy of mass reconstructions from weak lensing: local shear measurements
نویسنده
چکیده
Different options can be used in order to measure the shear from observations in the context of weak lensing. Here we introduce new methods where the isotropy assumption for the distribution of the source galaxies is implemented directly on the observed quadrupole moments. A quantitative analysis of the error associated with the finite number of source galaxies and with their ellipticity distribution is provided, applicable even when the shear is not weak. Monte Carlo simulations based on a realistic sample of source galaxies show that our procedure generally leads to errors ≈ 25% smaller than those associated with the standard method of Kaiser and Squires (1993).

Improving the accuracy of mass reconstructions from weak lensing: from the shear map to the mass distribution
In this paper we provide a statistical analysis of the parameter-free method often used in weak lensing mass reconstructions. It is found that a proper assessment of the errors involved in such a non-local analysis requires the study of the relevant two-point correlation functions. After calculating the two-point correlation function for the reduced shear, we determine the expected error on the...
متن کاملWeak lensing ellipticities in a strong lensing regime
It is now routine to measure the weak gravitational lensing shear signal from the mean ellipticity of distant galaxies. However, conversion between ellipticity and shear assumes local linearity of the lensing potential (i.e. that the spatial derivatives of the shear are small), and this condition is not satisfied in some of the most interesting regions of the sky. We extend a derivation of lens...
متن کاملWeak lensing mass reconstructions of the ESO Distant Cluster Survey ⋆
We present weak lensing mass reconstructions for the 20 high-redshift clusters in the ESO Distant Cluster Survey. The weak lensing analysis was performed on deep, 3-color optical images taken with VLT/FORS2, using a composite galaxy catalog with separate shape estimators measured in each passband. We find that the EDisCS sample is composed primarily of clusters that are less massive than those ...
متن کاملWeak Lensing from Space Ii: Dark Matter Mapping
We study the accuracy with which weak lensing measurements can be made from space, and the subsequent resolution of both 3-dimensional and projected 2-dimensional dark matter maps. As a baseline, we use the instrumental specifications of the Supernova/Acceleration Probe (SNAP) satellite. We compute the sensitivity to shear as a function of depth for space-based observations. Our predictions are...
متن کاملGravitational Shear, Flexion and Strong Lensing
We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1689, incorporating measurements of the weak shear, flexion, and strong lensing induced in background galaxies. This is the first time that a shapelet technique has been used to reconstruct the distribution of mass in this cluster, and the first time that a flexion signal has been measured using cluster members as lenses. F...
